Dermalogica Ultra Calming Facial
Men’s Skin
Its always great to see your treatments working and improving someones skin….but even more so when its your husbands! After moving to Ibiza, my husbands occasionally sensitive and aggravated skin…went into overdrive. We had flaky, sore, red, inflamed skin all over!
So after a few days of complaining and pleading, we finally found a spare hour to get together and get him sorted. Obviously, the only thing for it was a Dermalogica UltraCalming Facial for sensitised skin. This range of facials are designed to combat the range of causes and triggers which create such uncomfortable skin conditions. So what causes sensitivity?
Sensitised skin can come from a wide range of triggers. Dehydration breaks the lipid barrier, leaving cracks in this protective layer allowing allergens to enter. This often tricks people into believing they have sensitive skin, when really they do not. They are simply suffering from an impaired barrier function, giving burning, tingling and stinging when applying products and sometimes even water to the skin.
So where do the allergens come from that then enter through these cracks in the barrier? The free radicals in the environment, the foods we eat, pollution, UV…the list goes on.So combined with the dehydration is it any wonder so many of the population are experiencing these sensitised conditions?
The final two triggers, and perhaps the two we’d like to think we have the most control over are stress and poor product choices. There is a direct link to stress and impaired barrier function, which can lead to conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, adult acne, hyper pigmentation and rosacea, all of which are painful and difficult conditions to resolve. We must learn to deal with our stress in a way that is effective to us personally in order to alleviate sensitive skin conditions…what relaxes you? helps you to switch off? do more of this!
And what of our poor product choices? The majority of most high street products (and some high end) are packed full of preservatives and additives to prolong their shelf life, make them stretch a little bit further and make them cheap to buy. This can include alcohol, fragrance, lanolin, mineral oil, soap and surfactants (foaming agents) Check your bathroom shelf for these ingredients and seriously think about making the switch, you will struggle to ever achieve skin health with these ingredients spread across your face day and night. We have said it before here at Glam and we’ll say it again, your skin is a history book which displays all of our skin mistakes for the world to see, we must start investing now to make our history book look a little more readable!
Dermalogica UltraCalming Facials aim to control and manage inflammation, dehydration and soreness caused by these triggers. Red Hogweed Root Extract limits neurogenic inflammation-induced redness (itching, psoriasis, rosacea, hypersensitivity) Oat Kernal Extracts to reduce itch, redness and irritation and Sunflower Seed Extract contains ceramides – an essential component of barrier lipid layer.
And what does the Dermalogica UltraCalming Facial entail? an in depth face map to determine the root cause of the sensitised skin, a double cleanse using UltraCalming Cleanser, a gentle Daily Microfoliant brightening and flake relief, but non abrasive, followed by the UltraCalming Skin Relief Massage – a tailored pressure point massage which is gentle and calming without aggravating the skin – which a standard massage would be certain to do as it stimulates the blood flow and causes more redness! An UltraCalming Colloidal Oatmeal Mask with the UltraCalming Complex to reduce itch, redness and irritation and finally a layer of the wonderful Barrier Repair – packed full of vitamins C & E, Borage Seed Oil and Evening Primrose to soothe, shield and repair skins protective barrier and of course UltraSenstive Shield, SPF 30.
So…back to the husband. How was his skin after the UltraCalming Facial? Immediately after the facial, the redness was visibly improved, the flakiness had disappeared and his skin felt less hot and prickly. 24 hours after treatment, redness had all but disappeared and the flakiness had not made a re-appearance. 48 hours later, his skin was glowing. As for his sometimes flaky approach to housework… that’s still a work in progress!
